The Great BHBPA Bake Off

Ready, Steady, Bake … Wednesday 30 October

The Great British Bake Off resurfaced on our screens on Channel 4 on August 27. Since then we’ve all been digesting Cake, Biscuit, Bread and Dairy Week, so you’re sure to have picked up some tips and will have no difficulty getting in the mood for The BHBPA Awesome Autumn Battle of the Bakes, in support of St Peter & St James Hospice.

It’s time to don your pinnies, whip out your whisks and work out how to use that pesky oven timer.

We know our members include many talented bakers and this will give us all a chance to bake up a storm. The icing on the cake being it’s all for a worthwhile cause.  And, as you’ll probably know, doing good makes you feel good!

The BHBPA Awesome Autumn Battle Of The Bakes is a great opportunity for colleagues to get together to share tips and delicious treats, network, build teams and do some good at the same time.

The competition is the brainchild of Bio-Productions, our own environmentally-friendly manufacturer based on Victoria Road. The team are past-masters of community-based charity events and often include bake sales in their fundraising efforts.

Angela Gill, MD of Bio-Productions is tickled pink about the competition, “We love a good bake at Bio. You can be sure, we’ll be sharing tips on how to aereate, dust and drizzle and checking out who has the best crumb in the company!

There are opportunities for individuals as well as a corporate challenge for the bosses.

All you have to do is:

Bake an array of autumn-themed goodies – be inspired by russet reds, burnished browns and fiery oranges, flavours of toffee apples, pumpkins cranberries and cloves, and graphic leaf designs or freestyle your own-take on autumn.

Competitors must belong to a company that is a member of BHBPA

The fee is £2 per entry for the individual classes, and £5 for the company class.

There are two individual categories:

  • Decorated Large Cake/Small Cakes
  • Decorated Cookies/Biscuits

And a company-orientated category

  • Corporate Showstopper Cake – reflecting the business, its products or people.

Entries will be judged by a representative of Burgess Hill-based Lizzie’s Food Factory and a local dignitary… and possibly a Master Baker.

Winners in each category will receive a prize and we can all enjoy the treats and other refreshments at the lunchtime prize-giving.

On judgment day, Wednesday 30 October, contestants will drop off their entries (and entry fees) at the King’s Centre on the way to work (between 8.30 and 9.30am).  Judging will take place during the morning.

From 12 noon until 2pm we’ll be holding a networking event with food… and, of course cake!  The prize-giving will be at one o’clock, so please come along when you can and support this fun event and buy some cake to take home.

Give it a go – it’s bound to be a piece of cake!

Just email us ( in advance to let us know you will be busy baking for this great cause, and we will be ready for you on the day.
