Support for your business

HMRC support on EU trading

As we continue to adjust to doing business post-Brexit, the HMRC are reminding organisations that they could be affected by the new rules if they:

  • buy goods from an EU seller and bring them into the UK
  • send goods you’ve sold to a buyer in an EU country
  • haven’t exchanged money but need to move equipment that you use for your business, between the UK and the EU.

To help with these changes, you can now apply for the SME Brexit Support Fund. Smaller businesses can get up to £2,000 to pay for practical support, including training or professional advice to adjust to new customs, rules of origin and VAT rules when trading with the EU. Applications must be received before 3‌‌0‌‌ Ju‌‌ne.

Business rates discounts reduced from 1st July

All businesses or organisations liable for business rates in the Mid Sussex District Council area that are eligible, or could potentially qualify for the Business Rates Expanded Retail Discount (for the Leisure, Hospitality and Retail sector), should know the current 100% discount finishes on the 30th June 2021. From the 1st July 2021, the maximum discount will be 66% but will be subject to a cash cap. Mid Sussex DC will require all businesses wanting to receive this discount from the 1st July 2021 to complete a simple online claim form at

Restart Grants

Businesses can apply for a new wave of funding as announced by central government.  As with previous grant schemes the new Restart Grants are being administered by Mid Sussex District Council. Businesses in the non-essential retail sector will be eligible for one-off grants of up to £6,000, while businesses in the hospitality, accommodation, leisure, personal care, and gym sectors, which reopen later, will be eligible for one-off grants of up to £18,000.

These grants are payable based on the sector your business is in regardless of whether your business was mandated to close or not on the 5th January 2021.  Further government guidance is available here.

The application process is quick, simple and the amount paid is based on the rateable value of the property.  Businesses can apply for the new Restart Grant support via

If a business has applied for previous funding via grant approvals much of the information will already be in the system, making application even quicker. If you do not have a rateable property, you can still apply for funding via the discretionary grant below.

Discretionary Grants

A further round of discretionary grant funding is also now accepting applications. This Additional Restrictions Grant (ARG) is a discretionary grant for businesses closed or suffering from Covid-19. This current round of the Additional Restrictions Grant (ARG) scheme opened for applications on the 6th April 2021 with a closing date of the 30th June 2021 or whilst funds allow.

The Restart Grants are normally paid within 5 days of an eligible claim being made with the discretionary ARG being considered every month, however assessment and payments of eligible claims will take longer.  Further details for both schemes can be found on the website here
