Space Grant for Manor Field Primary

To Infinity and Beyond! Manor Field Primary School wins £1k Tim Peake Space Grant

Pupils at Manor Field Primary School in Burgess Hill are looking forward to a week of exciting ‘Surviving in Space’ activities from 7-11 March 2016, thanks to a £1,000 grant from the UK Space Education Office (ESERO-UK).

Launched to celebrate astronaut Tim Peake’s mission to the International Space Station (ISS), the grant scheme is open to applications from primary, secondary and post-16 schools across the UK and aims to inspire the potential astronauts of tomorrow with a range of imaginative and educational projects.

Activities at Manor Field Primary School will include learning what it is really like to live in space, from how astronauts breathe, what they eat and drink – and even how they go to the toilet! There will also be a visit by Brighton Dive Centre and the opportunity to design a space helmet, create a mini ecosystem and dress up in scuba equipment. Pupils from Reception to Year 6 will all be involved, under the watchful eye of the ‘Attending School Dog’, Bertie Button who is keen to point out that a dog made it into space first, and nearly 60 years before Major Tim!

Karen Ashworth, School Governor, Manor Field Primary School commented:

“It is so important that children get to experience a wide range of activities and have the chance to be inspired by a wide range of possible careers. We are enormously grateful to ESERO-UK for the grant that allows us to generate so much excitement about Tim Peake’s space mission through all these wonderful enrichment activities.”
