Shredded Neat Doing Something Right

Earlier this week I went out to the Ditchling Trading Estate to meet Tony Hadley, who now heads up the company called Shredded Neat. I met him outside the spacious building in which they do their work, and luckily for me it was quite a calm period for them. I met Mike, who was supervising the shredder, and Tess who works in the office. Both were very pleasant and accommodating. Then Mark showed me the shredder they bought for £60k and talked me through its operation. He reckons that purchase was the key to their success, but it must also be down to finding good staff and listening to their customers, too  Here’s Mark’s take on the company …

We have now been up and running for over 5 years, since the business was created by Tony Hannigan MD of Wellesley Wealth Advisory, an award-winning financial consultancy based in Burgess Hill and fellow members of the BHBPA.

Tony had a vision of creating a centre of excellence for secure data destruction in Sussex, but more importantly wanted this new business to be as ‘sustainable’ as possible, taking every opportunity to ensure our environmental performance was exceptional.  This was supported by investment in the best technology and collection vehicles that were available at the time, we bedded the business down on the SM Tidy Industrial Estate at Ditchling Common.

Operating to the highest professional and security standards, we were fully accredited to ISO 9001/14001 within the first 18 months, as well as the British Security Standard 15713, all externally audited for the comfort of our growing customer base.

The first year into the business, we realised that it wasn’t enough to be just a ‘shredding company’, but we wanted to create a unique data destruction and recycling business right here in the heart of Sussex.  So, we diversified, reaching out to address the other recycling needs our customers told us about, adding into the mix, cardboard recycling, non-secure paper recycling, plastics recycling, waste electrical & electronic equipment etc.

So what can we do? Well we can provide our services right across the South-East, though our home is Sussex. We now have several hundred customers from Littlehampton in the West, to Canterbury in the East and to Reigate in the North. We have lots of customers who are also, like us, members of the BHBPA and have forged some great commercial and personal relationships across Mid-Sussex, such as working with local third generation family run T W Plummer & Son, AJ Vehicle Engineers and a host of Sussex-based suppliers.

It was great to spend some time with Peter Liddell from BHBPA this week, as sometimes a business gets so preoccupied with its own stuff that it forgets about what it does that is good. We must be doing something right, as we retain pretty much all our clients, losing just 2-3 a year (less than 1%), usually because they have moved out of Sussex.

We seem to succeed because we listen to our customers, rather than try and tell them what they need, we offer bespoke solutions to all manner of data security or recycling problems, working in partnership with a vast range of commercial and not-for-profit organisations, we are flexible and adaptable, and can make the right decision – in an instant….

We have an exceptional team here at Ditchling, otherwise we couldn’t do what we do, we collect and recycle unlimited amounts of paper/cardboard/plastics, because we invested in the top British & European technology, we send at least one or more 40 foot articulated trailers off site every week, directly to the re-processors with ‘Zero-Waste-to Landfill’.   25 tonnes of paper for recycling in mill-sized bales which weigh 500kg each, day in day out.  We have the capability to process several hundred archive boxes of documents a day, either on their own site or at ours, plus we have the responsiveness to pick up a single sack of secure shredding anywhere in Sussex usually within 48 hours.

We also operate a free ‘drop in’ option for many of our customers struggling with the high cost of commercial waste bins, where customers bring in cardboard or non-secure paper for recycling (unmixed). A large 1100L bin can only at best hold about 40kgs of cardboard, but can cost between £7-15 a bin to have collected, so drop off’s can work well if customers have suitable transport.
