Remembrance at Ockenden Manor

Over 40 members and friends turned up for the event at Ockenden Manor on Monday this week. It was Remembrance Day and, fittingly, the Coordinator spoke about World War One and the very short life of Wilfred Owen. He then read the famous poem ‘Dulce et Decorum Est’ .The Chair Susan Fleet followed with more poetry ‘In Flanders Field’ and spoke of Vera Lynn and World War Two.

There followed two presentations. The first was by Wendy Agate, who told us about St Peter & St James Hospice. She went through the interesting history of the hospice, before explaining exactly what they do there and how they raise the large sum of money necessary to provide such excellent support for the terminally ill. It certainly made me very proud that this hospice is the favoured charity of the BHBPA. Indeed we have been raising money, albeit in fairly small amounts, for them for many years now.

Next up was Roy Stannard to tell us about Burgess Hill Radio, which has now been on air and accessible on radio for over a year. We heard about the dedication of the volunteers who run the station, the range, the coverage and a general compelling case for supporting local radio, particularly at a time when local newspapers are struggling to survive.

It was pleasing to give some space to two local and very worthwhile organisations, and I thank them for providing such interesting presentations.  The networking then began as people took advantage of some bubbly provided by the Hotel. One hour later there were still members there in conversation. The venue is a particularly conducive one for comfortable conversation.

Yet again, an event proves popular and is well attended. I thank you all for your support for events I have organised over the past thirteen years. It has been a real pleasure to serve the BHBPA and I shall miss such occasions. It was good too to hear kind words from so many members on Monday.
