The Principal of Plumpton College was invited for an interview on BBC radio. This live interview with presenter Sarah Gorrell was on air at 17:54 on Tuesday 8 December 2015, covering Sussex, Surrey, NE Hants 104.5, 104.8 and 95.3 FM and online.
The presenter asked how he, as a new Principal, was hoping to build on the success of Plumpton College, which offers a wide variety of vocational qualifications, how this equips young people for the future, his plans for the sector and how both traditional skills and social media are used.
The Principal mentioned the fabulous opportunity for him to take over the reins of such a successful college, with such a great profile in the industry, which has provided success for many during the past 100 or so years, the exciting subjects offered, with some 18 different subjects available, many of which have had significant investments in facilities and resources, the students provided with opportunities to work in the state- of- the- art facilities and the unique elements to being a student, including being actively engaged in learning while using the latest technology. The rapidly changing sector demands changes, so the curriculum, classroom based activity, university level provision and work with employers through apprenticeships all need to change, to best meet their needs. This offers a great opportunity to continue to work with the College employers from across those different areas, to provide an evolving, dynamic curriculum to best meet those needs, going forwards.
He mentioned the viticulture provision and research, which puts the college on an international scale; engaging with the significant numbers of employers in the rural industries; the college attracting substantial numbers of people, many from a non-rural background and informed that many people are now also employed in ancillary services in the sector.
Listeners heard of the successful career opportunities, noting that 92% of students studying on levels 3 to 5 last year graduated to paid employment.
He was clear about the college philosophy and concluded that it is a really exciting time to be studying in this area.
