The week started badly for many of those who work on Sheddingdean Business Park, I believe, as a temporary traffic signal caused long queues for those trying to get to work. The roadworks were on the B2036 north from the Sheddingdean roundabout and the temporary lights caused mayhem as the workforce tried to reach the business park from Haywards Heath.
Of course such work, in this case renewal of gas supply pipes, has to be done, but from what I hear there was no warning of the hold up beforehand, so it could not be avoided with prior knowledge. A journey from the Bolnore estate to Sheddingdean took as long as one hour and twenty minutes, apparently, and some businesses were disrupted as a result of staff lateness.
I managed to speak to someone at West Sussex Highways about the issue and was told that there would almost certainly have been signs up beforehand to warn motorists of the work which was scheduled for 21st-25th May. In fact, I’m told the work was completed on that Monday, for the traffic light had gone by Tuesday morning.
I was made aware of the website www.westsussex.gov.uk, (roadworks information) where you can see all the roads which will be subject to delays due to roadworks. Of course, it would be ridiculous to assume that everyone would consult this information before every journey, but it is at least an effort to increase awareness of problems.
