Last week’s networking event

Last week’s networking event

Over thirty in attendance for an interesting talk about the cybersecurity
There were also valuable insights from a group of well-informed business people on all manner of topics, and plenty of time for networking with a varied group of faces, again, as often is the case, some familiar faces, some we see from time to time and a few new ones.

Random conversations I had myself with some of our delegates brought up some very important insights about cyber security and insurance. Dean Stoner from Base Insurance explained more about a common issue – insufficient cover against cyber-attacks. Heather Kingdon of Assist First Aid was telling me about defibrillators…as we were talking we decided to find out where the nearest one was…so we used an app on her phone…turns out Mid Sussex Golf Club was on that app’s map.

This is a very useful tool but importantly, if you have a defibrillator on your premises, one you need to look into. See below for further very important information that came out of that random conversation with Heather.

We were again treated to some excellent bacon baps and Danish pastries by Mid Sussex Golf Club and the golf course looks stunning on a sunny Tuesday morning. Many thanks to Lee Andrew, Mike Abbott and the rest of the club’s team for hosting another great event.

Another good turnout of members from businesses large and small in attendance

Yann Davies, MD of ABCOM

Yann Davies of Abcom then gave us a no nonsense jargon-free overview of  cyber essential certification and a lot more.

It was a fantastic session, with strong engagement throughout, thoughtful questions, and some great collaboration between local businesses. I also personally came away having made some valuable new connections.
The session focused on Cyber Essentials, supply-chain risk, and why cyber security can no longer be treated as a once-a-year exercise.

One of the key messages was that a breach affecting just one supplier can quickly create a domino effect across many other organisations. In that sense, cyber security is no longer just about protecting your own business. It is about resilience, trust, and protecting the wider ecosystem around you.

That is why real peace of mind comes from continuous cyber security, not point-in-time compliance. Cyber Essentials remains a valuable baseline, but it should be seen as an ongoing commitment, not something to pass one year and forget the next.

BHBPA are doing a great job of creating events like this to educate and connect local businesses, and we are pleased to support that effort.
