Jon Walks 100km for Charity

I discovered this week that Jon Woodhead, a well known figure who has worked at Nova Direct Mail for many years, recently took on a demanding 100k walk across the South Downs to raise money for charity.  Along with his good friend, they set off on a very warm day somewhere near Petersfield at 9am, and arrived at Brighton Racecourse 28 hours later.  They were raising money for the Gurkha Welfare Trust.

He bought a reasonably cheap pair of walking boots and some excellent socks in Haywards Heath and he claims that the double socks he bought were the reason he got no blisters on the walk.

Jon told me …”

Despite having lived in this area for the last 27 years., I have never really explored the south downs. I have always talked about this with a close chum, and one day he suggested that we form a team and take on an organized walk called the Oxfam Trailwalker which raises money for Oxfam and the Gurkha Welfare Trust.

The Oxfam Trailwalker is a 100km walk from Petersfield to a  finish at Brighton Racecourse and has to be completed in 30hrs or less,. I wanted to do it for a host of reasons, primarily because of advancing yrs. (64) and because I wanted to achieve something before the old body finally gives way. Secondly, my dear old mum and dad passed away recently, who both served in the Second World War. Finally, my father in law unexpectedly passed away in April of this year and he served in the Paras out in the Middle East during the 60s.

I feel that I would like to raise a bit of money for the retired veterans who were willing to risk their lives for our future and safety, and also in memory of my loving family members who are no longer with us.”

He enjoyed it so much that he has another charitable venture planned already. He and five mates are going to row 8 miles down the Thames in a six-man boat, with a coxswain, from the Houses of Parliament to Greenwich. I believe they may be smuggling some beers on board to speed the journey.
