Horse Play?

On Friday I had a call from Mandy Thomas-Atkin, a town councillor, asking me if I knew anything about the two horses which had been tethered on the lovely green space opposite Rockwell Collins and Icon Live in York Road. I was somewhat taken aback, as you might imagine. She told me that the police had been informed, as had the RSPCA, and  that people were concerned to find the owners.  The only other time I remember seeing horses on Victoria Business Park was when they were harnessed to a trap which was being driven at breakneck speed by a traveller youth among a group who had visited us and taken up residence in William Way  before the Premier Inn was built.

On Tuesday I had a couple more calls from people telling me about the horses.  One was very concerned for them and had been over to inspect them. She told me that they were in good condition and not cold, as they had heavy coats on them. She was going to make sure they had water at least, and she told me that someone was throwing them apples to eat. Meanwhile, they seemed to be very happy grazing around in the lush grass of that green space.

As the police were not very interested and the RSPCA said they could only intervene if the horses were suffering harm, it was left to the landowner to solve the problem. I went over there to get the pictures in the newsletter on Tuesday afternoon, just before I saw the MD of Hargreaves in the Steering Group meeting. He had only just found out about the equine visitors and was wondering what he could do about it. As far as I am aware the horses may well be there still – it’s all a bit of a mystery, although it does raise some people’s fears that the horse grazing  will be followed by a number of caravans arriving and settling there. It has been known before, as some of you will remember. Let’s hope it all ends pleasantly and the horses are moved on soon.
