The month of May is turning out to be an exciting month for the Plumpton College wine team. First is the annual London Wine Fair (May 5-7th), the biggest wine trade event in the UK. With over eighteen thousand wine trade professionals expected to attend this three-day event, the Plumpton stand (W20 ground floor) will be no doubt be buzzing. Plumpton wine students and staff will be offering their white, red and sparkling wines; providing a focal point for alumni to come together and for prospective students to find out about studying wine at Plumpton College.
The next event is the annual Plumpton College Open Day. A huge event in the Sussex calendar, thousands of people will visit the College on the 14th of May. All areas of the college will be open to the public, and a wide range of exhibits and activities will be on show. In the Wine Centre, people young and old will be set on a discovery trail, starting with the Rathfinny research winery, where students from the MSc Viticulture and Oenology will be conducting a tasting of their 2015 project wines. There will be hourly demonstrations on the science of wine in the Jack Ward laboratory, for those who are interested in understanding more about their favourite tipple. The winery will be open to visitors, and, after a training session in the IOC wine tasting room, you will be offered a full range of Plumpton Estate wines to taste and buy. In the Vintners’ Room, Wine Business students will be selling wine from successful Plumpton graduates: Chateau de Monfaucon (Bordeaux), Thorne & Daughters (South Africa) and Wines of Momentary Destination (Croatia).
Rounding out the month is the International Cool Climate Wine Symposium. This ‘Olympics’ of the wine world, held every four years in a different continent, is taking place in Brighton from the 26th to the 28th May. The programme includes 29 different sessions, involving wine experts from all over the world and tastings of top English wines. Chris Foss, Head of Wine Department at Plumpton College, was part of the 2012 team that went to Tasmania to bid for the event to come to England, and chairs the Programme Committee: “This international event is a must for all wine professionals, and will really establish England as a producer of world-class wine. May is going to be a really busy month!”.
