Burgess Hill Green Circle Network

Dear Peter,

It was good meeting you last Tuesday at the B H Sustainable Transport event. My apologies for not forwarding the promised details sooner, in the hope that some of your members would prove supportive, but here they are now.

It occurred to me that it could be very useful for a start if your members actually became members of our group for the very modest sum of £6 per year per business. This would ensure that they received a 12 p A4 full colour newsletter every quarter, keeping them informed about conservation matters in Burgess Hill, including planning where appropriate, Green Circle route development, wildlife events & publicity events, as well as the annual “Wild About Mid Sussex” event in St. John’s Park. I’ve attached a pdf. of our membership form just in case.

Sponsorship is always welcome, but we are not investors nor merchant bankers! We are all completely unpaid volunteers; as a registered charity (1118153) we present audited accounts at the end of each financial year to the Charity Commission. We do not spend money on entertaining, rather every penny goes to further local conservation. Because of this, we do not seek random large amounts unless they are for a specific & well-proved purpose. We will be seeking quite a large amount soon in order to pay for bow-topped railings around the pond on Burgess Hill Recreation Ground to protect it from vandals – it’s probably the oldest breeding pond for great crested newts in Burgess Hill – but I’m awaiting quotations before attempting to raise an amount probably in excess of £12,000! Small donations are always welcome, however, as all our events are free to the public, except for a couple of talks in the winter when we have to rent a hall & pay a speaker. Even then, we just about break even. A list of some of our achievements is also attached.

Most of our volunteers’ time is devoted to managing & maintaining Bedelands nature reserve on behalf of Mid Sussex District Council. Maybe some of your members might like to help at one of our work parties? We also have a committee member who runs his own team-building sessions in bush-craft, which may appeal to some of them, but I doubt these would be free as he does this for a living.

I’ve attached a pdf. of our April newsletter containing my annual report to give a reasonably detailed idea of the sort of things we do. I do hope it will encourage a positive response from your members.

I’ll send some information about the Sheddingdean church/community centre separately later. Thank you for your help.

With best wishes,

(FoBHGCN – chairman)
