In July, 100 Year 10 students were launched into the working world. A scary prospect for them and the employers, but they flourished. There were so many wonderful comments from employers but the one heard most often was “One of the best work experience students we’ve ever had”
34 students excelled in areas of their work placement and were invited to take part in the Work Experience Student of the Year Award which is sponsored by the Burgess Hill Business Parks Association. These students were asked to give a presentation of their work placement and what they have learnt from it. This is a real high point of work experience for me as I get to hear about all the wonderful things that they have done.
There were 3 students in particular who stood out; Lucy , Phoebe and Tegan .
Lucy chose to go to Tesco because she wanted to learn customer service skills. She decided that in the future, she may want a part time job and this experience would help her achieve this. Her employer at Tesco stated that Lucy had really taken to this experience and would be an asset as a colleague.
Phoebe organised a placement a J.Cocoa in Hassocks, where she learnt about making chocolate from starting with a cocoa bean to producing the final product. Phoebe also learnt about the marketing and packaging during her week, utilising her Food Technology and Photography GCSEs in the process. Phoebe’s employer commented that she work hard, was motivated and showed she can learn quickly, adapt and perform to a highly skilled standard.
Tegan went to the Brighton Greyhound Trust where she learnt how to care for retired greyhounds. She wanted to learn more about working with animals and her employer commented that Tegan was a pleasure to have and worked hard – I would have her back as a volunteer anytime! They said.
It was really difficult to choose a winner from these 3 amazing young ladies, whose presentations were of such high quality.
Ms Howell and I felt the winner, Phoebe Macleod had chosen a work experience placement in a very specialist field and had also shown great skill at it.
I would like to congratulate all three finalists and say a huge well done to all students who participated in work experience last year! You were amazing!
