Befriended Charity Launch

Befriended is a local charity set up in March of this year to support lonely, vulnerable and isolated older people. The charity is registered with the Charity Commission under the umbrella of The Point Church (part of the Church of England). The registered number is 1147721.

The charity has a Christian ethos but supports people of any faith or none. It works by providing volunteers to meet with lonely older clients in the client’s home to allow them to chat for an hour or so when otherwise they might not see anybody all week.  Research shows that being older and isolated is as detrimental to health as smoking, obesity or high blood pressure and that increased social contact for instance through a befriending service – can help to mitigate this.

Referrals to Befriended typically come from among others, Community Groups Churches, GPs, family members and community groups.

Befriended is officially launching on October 1st with a large tea party and entertainment for around 200 older people. This will be held at St. Paul’s Catholic College in Burgess Hill. The date has been chosen as it coincides with International Older Persons Day. This is a day to celebrate older people and was founded by the UN in 1990.

Befriended is now approaching local companies to sponsor the launch event. We estimate that the costs for the day including venue, catering, furniture hire and entertainment for the guests will be in the region of £5000 which would of course be spread across a number of sponsors. Any amounts however small would be greatly appreciated

We are asking local companies to make a contribution of their choice to support this very worthwhile charity. In return we can offer a mention on invitations and the opportunity to put details of your service in a ‘goody bag’ that will be offered to our guests. Over and above this whilst not confirmed at the time of writing we will be seeking coverage from local press including television, radio and print media and mention can be made here as well. The opportunity will also highlight your members’ commitment to the community.

If members are interested in this opportunity or have questions please get in touch with me on the contact details below.

In the meantime if you have any questions please do let me know
