Aneela British Powerlifting Champion 2019!

Sheer elation to share my news that I smashed the British squat and deadlift records to become the ABPU British Powerlifting Champion 2019, in the Masters 56kg bodyweight class. The three day Championship took place 10th to 12th May at Bodypower, at the NEC in Birmingham; I travelled up on Friday, weighed-in on Saturday and competed on Sunday.

The three disciplines in powerlifting are back squat, bench press and deadlift, and having smashed three British records at the qualifier back in January, I set myself new goals to break my own records… really big numbers so the challenge was on!

My physical and psychological reactions at competitions are extreme, I still find the environment intimidating and I get very anxious so I knew I had to learn to control my nerves, otherwise I would not perform at my best.

I worked with a sports performance coach and we used a kinesthetic technique (how the body feels) which allowed me to ‘step into’ the feeling of lifting the weight whilst imagining the detail needed to do this successfully. It worked and I lifted the heaviest weights I’ve ever lifted in my life, 120kg deadlift – more than double my body weight.

In 2012 I was inspired by the London Olympics and I hit the gym. In 2015 I started powerlifting. I became addicted to a sport which made me feel good about myself. And the rest has become history which is shaping my future, within both my sport and at work.

Thank you to everyone who has supported me, with your words of encouragement and for believing in me. My family, my work and my powerlifting complement one another perfectly and I am very lucky indeed.
