Over the last few days Peter has been kindly handing over to me, as I get up to speed as the new BHBPA Coordinator. This newsletter is Peter’s last and in fact it’s been a bit of a joint effort. The next newsletter will be in the New Year.
I am definitely looking forward to 2020 and so I want to thank the directors and other people I’ve already been introduced to for the warm welcome.
Having enjoyed a long, varied and (I think) interesting corporate career I really understand the importance of a strong, vibrant and prosperous business-led economy. I also appreciate the buzz from achieving goals in the business setting – especially things that make a positive difference to the lives of people.
My wife and I originally moved to Burgess Hill in 1995 when I joined American Express, and our 3 now adult children were subsequently all educated locally. I believe I’ve forged good relationships with various local business groups and feel now is the right stage to devote more time to supporting our town and especially the business community.
I see one of my immediate priorities as getting the Association’s calendar of members events organised and communicated as quickly as possible, and to that end please add Tuesday 7th January on to your calendar when we hope to have the new MP for Mid Sussex, Mims Davies joining us for breakfast with an 8am start at the Hickstead Hotel. I also want to hear your thoughts about topics and features for later in the year.
Naturally, I will be prioritising meeting as many members as I can over the coming weeks and months as well as taking forward the much loved regular BHBPA newsletter, although the directors have asked me to reduce the distribution to 2 weekly so as to focus more time on supporting members’ priorities in what is likely to be a challenging environment over the coming years.
Of course, our Burgess Hill Means Business flagship event in 2020 will be the bi-annual business exhibition. We’ll be looking to finalise the date and venue ASAP and then work on this important event, including choosing a theme, can get going. I hope every member will feel able to ‘buy into’ the 2020 theme, no matter how big or small, general or specialised your line of business. Burgess Hill business has a story to tell, and 2020 will be a great year to speak up confidently about it.
Of course, like many others I want to thank Peter Liddell, not only for the sterling work he has done at BHBPA, but also for the support he’s affording me. Peter has certainly nurtured a wonderful community of business friendships in and around Burgess Hill which many people cherish. He has become the face of business in Burgess Hill and will be a tall act to follow. I hope I do you proud Peter!
While I hope I have some useful skills and experience that will benefit the members of BHBPA, my attitude is very much that I’m here to listen and learn too. I want to be accessible and to meet members for a coffee and a chat, to hear about your concerns and suggestions and encourage volunteers to propose interesting talks and visits to your premises.
We’re getting my email sorted at the moment, so in the meantime please either use the BHBPA contact form at www.bhbpa.co.uk or SMS me on 07740 638414.
"The BHBPA is a fantastic hub for our business community to get together and catch up, discuss important local issues and connect new and interesting enterprises."
"“We have been members of BHBPA from its inception, and seen the organisation steadily grow and expand into the dynamic entity it is today, bringing positive benefits to all its members.""
"“Sutton Winson have been members of the BHBPA for around 7 years. We have found it a great way to keep in touch with Burgess Hill businesses and to meet with likeminded people. It’s not just another “networking” group, as it tackles the real issues and gets things done”"
"I am delighted to have a long-standing relationship with the BHBPA. Since its foundation the Association has gone from strength to strength and there is no doubt that it has brought huge benefits to its members and the business community as a whole through the partnerships it has formed with the local authorities, Sussex Police and local organisations. It is paramount that Burgess Hill businesses have an effective collective voice."
