News: Excellent Tour of HPC

Posted on 2nd April 2019

On Wednesday last week BHBPA Members were invited to have a tour of the engineering company HPC, a stalwart manufacturing centre of Burgess Hill for 60 years. I can tell you, and I feels sure others who came will agree, that it was a very worthwhile experience. To hear and see first hand the scale and scope of the products made there and the industry sectors supplied by this company was incredible.

We met at 11.15 on a beautiful Spring morning and were shown around by Mark Jackson, the Business Development Director, and were joined at one point by  Jason Morgan, the MD of the Compressor division, who later told us many amusing anecdotes about working for this great company.  After a generous offering of coffee and Danish pastries we set off to look around the compressor section. I never knew compressed air and its uses could be so interesting. At HPC they make sumps for Aston Martins, provide the air compression to make beer and their compressors are fundamental to the working of the Thames Barrier. also Formula One cars

About to celebrate their 60th year of manufacturing, HPC has been partnered for 40 years with the German giant Kaeser, whose turnover last year was around £2bn. They are joined in the old fashioned way, by handshakes and gentlemenly agreement, and work together with enormous success eg some parts are engineered in Burgess Hill, then sent to Germany to be assembled, then sent back here for distribution.

HPC has another five industrial units around the country, mostly in the Midlands and south, vut their headquarters has always been in Burgess Hill. Before we left we went to the engineering unit and saw great examples of semi- automated production, where metal parts were engineered robotically in a series of separate procedures. Most machines were supervised by an engineer. We also saw engineers solving complex engineering problems using computer technology.  These products, eg compressors, require absolute precision in their manufacture, and HPC is a name associated with precision engineering.

“HPC Compressors Air Systems is recognised as the gold standard in the industry, supplying innovative products and system solutions to some of the UK’s leading companies.

It was clear in our tour that this excellent company is a major asset to the business park and especially to the town.  Our thanks to Mark Jackson for the tour and to the company for all their support.

"“Sutton Winson have been members of the BHBPA for around 7 years. We have found it a great way to keep in touch with Burgess Hill businesses and to meet with likeminded people. It’s not just another “networking” group, as it tackles the real issues and gets things done”"

"This association was started with a lot of effort from a few local businessmen and has proved to be a very powerful and useful tool for our business. The BHBPA has influence at the top level; when action is needed, the BHBPA gets it done. We are kept in touch with all that is happening on our doorstep and will often act because of what is published in the weekly emails / newsletters."

"The BHBPA is the most effective and dynamic business organisation I have ever worked with in over 30 years in Local Government. It has a very active and large membership whose points of view are taken seriously by all government structures. Peter Liddell does an excellent job in providing unique and enjoyable networking opportunities where members interact and discuss points of mutual interest. It provides a forum for businesses to discuss common issues, to share experiences and to play a powerful and meaningful role in the Burgess Hill community. The BHBPA provides important and credible support for all its members and ensures that their best interests are represented where necessary. "
