Five outstanding young Sussex musicians will be pulling out all the stops as they compete for a £1000 prize in the finals of the Coro Nuovo Young Musician of the Year 2018/19.
Now in its third year, the competition is open to singers and instrumentalists aged between 18 and 25 who are about to begin or are currently studying at one of the UK’s leading conservatoires.
Judges whittled a total of thirty-one competition applicants down to ten, who auditioned for a place in the finals. The finalists are: Andrew Martin (flute), Claire Ward (soprano), George Robinson (classical guitar), Rebecca Leggett (mezzo soprano) and Rory Green (baritone).
The finalists will each perform a 10-minute showcase piece at Coro Nuovo’s concert on Saturday 14th July at St Andrew’s Church in Burgess Hill. Judges will announce the competition winner at the end of the concert.
Trumpet player Gideon Brooks took the title last year. “I was delighted to win the Coro Nuovo Young Musician of the Year 2017/18. The generous prize helped me to fund my final year of postgraduate studies at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.”
Kate Kent, the Chair of Coro Nuovo, said: “Once again we have been amazed by the quality of the bursary applications we received this year. It has been an incredibly hard job selecting the four Coro Nuovo Young Musician finalists. It will be even harder choosing the ultimate winner. We are also grateful to local Sussex company Traditional Oak and Timber who are again the main sponsors of the Young Musician Competition.”
Coro Nuovo is a leading Sussex choir consisting of top singers from around the county. Its Music Director and Conductor is international tenor Andrew Rees. This year the choir celebrates its 5th anniversary. It has also formed a new Youth Choir for singers aged 11 to 16.
