News: More Radio links with TBHA

More Radio teams up with the Burgess Hill Academy (and discovers some budding radio stars!)

 

Directly as a result of the pre-Christmas BHBPA drinks at The Woolpack Roy Stannard of More Radio met up with Burgess Hill Academy Head Teacher John Francies and his assistant Elaine Setterfield to discuss the possibility of Year 10 Media Students getting on the radio.

 

After a meeting distinguished by great ideas flying around in all directions, John and Roy decided that an internal competition to write a 30” radio script amongst the Media Studies students would be fun – and challenging!

 

Media Studies teacher Paul Sluman was recruited and the next stage consisted of Roy going back into a classroom for the first time in 25 years on Thursday 10th May for a couple of hours (Roy is a former WSCC Secondary School Department Head – a bit like our leader Peter Liddell, his specialism was History!) Roy gave two groups of Year 10 Media students an overview of the radio industry (It was interesting to hear how many of the them listen to local radio – admittedly in the back seats of their parents’ cars!). More Radio’s parent company Media Sound Holdings also owns Sussex Living and Magnet magazines and cross-media integrated marketing was also discussed (see pictures).

 

Roy introduced the students to the concept of writing for radio, keeping it short and punchy – 75 words for a typical 30 second script – and how radio commercials get produced. He then asked them to have a go as actors on a script he has recently written for Absolute Solutions of Lindfield who travel out to customers in order to repair computers and laptops – and it was amusing to discover one or two budding actors!

 

The students then had a go at writing their own scripts – and while they were doing this Roy gave them an exclusive preview of a suite of three 30” Cats Protection ads which have not yet been aired – that include a very talented actress called  Sarah da Costa Mendes playing the part a cat (brilliantly!) – inviting visitors to the Chelwood Gate National Cat Centre.

 

The Academy competition will see the winning script based on why Burgess Hill Academy is the place to be as a student will be commercially produced (possibly with students voicing) and will go to air in July on More Radio across Mid Sussex. It is hoped that a party of students will also visit local radio studios to see how the station operates behind the scenes.
