Earlier this week I went along to the Sussex Sign company in Portslade to meet the MD, Norman Mayhew, and others working there, and to get an idea of what they do as a business.
It was Norman who came to greet me and to offer me some tea while the morning meeting was finishing off. Then Mike came to show me round. The company was started by Norman with his father in law almost 21 years ago. When the older man retired in 2007, Norman took it on and since that time it has moved premises from Newhaven to Portslade and expanded.
Essentially the company produces all types of signage, including wraps for vehicles, and they have established a very good reputation as an efficient and reliable company whose turnover last year was around £1.2 millions. They have 25 people working there, some of them out on the road, and others in the comfortable and tidy offices in Foredown Road. There are also 8 people working at the sister company on site, Sussex Promotions.
The most significant factor I noticed on entering the building was just how tidy and well organised it seemed to be, with extremely neat noticeboards and highly organised and visible work schedules. Even in the production areas, where materials were being cut and prepared using the latest machine technology, there was a certain tidiness and neatness, with everything packed and stacked with great precision and care.
The company produces all kinds of signs, some of which are designed beforehand and some of which they are asked to design. The team of two, sometimes three, design experts worked alone in another space using computer graphics to produce digital images. Their work takes them all over the country and into Wales and Scotland too.
Among many satisfied clients, they have done work for both local universities, the Brighton Centre, Legal & General, Glyndebourne, Sussex Police, a number of estate agents and several local secondary schools. They are, along with Sussex Promotions, the sponsors for Juice Radio Breakfast Club. In all business is going very well for this company, who have been members of the BHBPA now for almost two years. My thanks go to Norman, for inviting me down, and to Mike, for showing me around, but respect too to Julie, whose tends the work schedule boards with such fastidiousness, and all the staff for their welcome.
"The BHBPA is the most effective and dynamic business organisation I have ever worked with in over 30 years in Local Government. It has a very active and large membership whose points of view are taken seriously by all government structures. Peter Liddell does an excellent job in providing unique and enjoyable networking opportunities where members interact and discuss points of mutual interest. It provides a forum for businesses to discuss common issues, to share experiences and to play a powerful and meaningful role in the Burgess Hill community. The BHBPA provides important and credible support for all its members and ensures that their best interests are represented where necessary. "
"I am delighted to have a long-standing relationship with the BHBPA. Since its foundation the Association has gone from strength to strength and there is no doubt that it has brought huge benefits to its members and the business community as a whole through the partnerships it has formed with the local authorities, Sussex Police and local organisations. It is paramount that Burgess Hill businesses have an effective collective voice."
"“I have belonged to this group since I started my own business, Lea Graham Associates, in 1986. The association has been through several incarnations since then, but its most recent one, BHBPA, is by far the best.
It’s much more than just a networking group, although it is supremely good at that too. BHBPA is inclusive and friendly and acts like a mutual-support society. The events are stimulating, worthwhile and often great fun and I believe most members share this opinion.”"
"This association was started with a lot of effort from a few local businessmen and has proved to be a very powerful and useful tool for our business. The BHBPA has influence at the top level; when action is needed, the BHBPA gets it done. We are kept in touch with all that is happening on our doorstep and will often act because of what is published in the weekly emails / newsletters."
