Local Hospice has been celebrating its 40th anniversary with a special appeal

As 2015 is its 40th anniversary, St Peter & St James Hospice has been celebrating the year with a special appeal. The Hospice held an exciting calendar of events throughout this year and launched a special anniversary appeal to help support the vital services it provides to the community. All at the Hospice would like to thank those who have donated to the appeal, which has raised £37,000, so far.

Anyone still wishing to donate to the special appeal can do so online by going to the Hospice’s website at www.stpeter-stjames.org.uk or picking up a leaflet from the Hospice or any of its eight shops throughout the local community (Burgess Hill, Haywards Heath, Lewes, Lindfield and Uckfield).

While £37,000 is a fantastic amount, reaching £40,000 to match the 40th anniversary would make it even more special and provide additional much-needed funds. St Peter & St James is the Sussex hospice caring for patients in Burgess Hill, Haywards Heath, Lewes, Uckfield and surrounding villages. With a population of 200,000, if every person in the catchment area gave just £1 a month this would nearly cover the running costs.

In 2013-14 –

  • the Hospice’s Community Team made over 4000 visits to patients at home
  • the Hospice provided over 1500 counselling sessions for patients and families
  • 595 patients were cared for
  • the Hospice was able to support over one third of its inpatients to return home. All the Hospice services are free of charge to patients and loved ones and St Peter & St James relies on its local community for 86% of its funds, as just 14% comes from the Government. Peter Boyse, Chairman of St Peter & St James Hospice, said, “This has been a wonderful year celebrating our 40th anniversary with some splendid events – the highlight for me being our Ruby Charity Ball, back in October. “Our 40th anniversary appeal has been warmly received and, thanks to the incredible generosity of our local community, we have raised £37,000 from the appeal alone. The appeal will finish at the end of December and I’d like to encourage anyone who hasn’t donated yet to do so online. The members of staff do an amazing job and the services are free to the patients and their families, however, we can only provide this valuable service through raising funds. Please recognise our special anniversary by donating to your local hospice.”

Testimonials

"This association was started with a lot of effort from a few local businessmen and has proved to be a very powerful and useful tool for our business. The BHBPA has influence at the top level; when action is needed, the BHBPA gets it done. We are kept in touch with all that is happening on our doorstep and will often act because of what is published in the weekly emails / newsletters."

"“Sutton Winson have been members of the BHBPA for around 7 years. We have found it a great way to keep in touch with Burgess Hill businesses and to meet with likeminded people. It’s not just another “networking” group, as it tackles the real issues and gets things done”"

Bruce Millington, Manager
(Sutton Winson Ltd)

"As the local hospice for the area, it’s great that we receive so much support from the BHBPA. Last year the members raised an amazing £2150 through activities such as Bake Off and the BHBiz Awards. Each well planned members meeting enables good networking opportunities and speakers that are relevant to the present climate and local issues. We are proud to be members of BHBPA."

Wendy Agate, Community Fund Raising Manager
(St Peter & St James Hospice)

"“I can’t speak highly enough of the BHBPA. As a small local business we feel very much part of a community and thoroughly enjoy the annual exhibition and meetings throughout the year. Over the years we have built fantastic working relationships with many BHBPA members and every meeting and event offers us opportunities to work with more. This is networking at its best! ” "
