BURGESS HILL PUB WINS NATIONAL AWARD FOR BEST TRAINED STAFF
The Woolpack on Howard Avenue in Burgess Hill has beaten off competition from over 1100 pubs around the country to win the Best Trained Staff Award in national awards run by Heineken owned Star Pubs & Bars.
Licensees Dee Allen and Lance Nuttall received the prestigious award on behalf of their 30 staff at a gala celebration night in Liverpool from celebrity chef Simon Rimmer.
Dee and Lance took over the Woolpack, their first pub, six and a half years ago. Since then they have transformed it from a little used rundown local with a poor reputation into a popular and thriving community hub.
The judges noted how as well as investing in upgrading the pub and garden, introducing great quality locally sourced food and building a name for cask ales, Dee and Lance had put an emphasis on giving outstanding customer service by investing in training.
The judges were bowled over by the range of training Dee and Lance provide and paid tribute to their commitment to taking on young people from Burgess Hill and developing skills they could use throughout their working lives.
Chris Jowsey, trading director for Star Pubs & Bars said: “Dee and Lance scored top marks. Induction training, online training, on the job mentoring, NVQs, a buddy scheme, cask ale training, they do it all and reward staff with pay rises and treats as they progress. The emphasis on training is outstanding and the results, in terms of the service they give, are outstanding too. The Woolpack team is one of the best the judges have ever seen; knowledgeable and professional and, thanks to Lance and Dee, clearly love what they do and are committed to making their customers happy.”
The judges felt the training had also contributed to the Woolpack’s excellent record for staff retention creating “a welcoming family atmosphere, very special to the best pubs, where staff know customers and customers know staff.”
Says Dee, “We thrilled. We aim to put customer service at the heart of everything we do and we put a lot of effort into our training as a result. This is a fantastic accolade to the team, we’re all delighted.”
