Oakmeeds Meeting

About 25 people came to Oakmeeds for the latest Members meeting on Monday earlier this week. We gathered in the new Drama Studio and listened to presentations by the Head, Colin Taylor, and the Deputy Head, Simon Potten.
Colin talked through the latest trends in education, referring particularly to new examination qualifications and links with business. He alluded to the difficulties that lie ahead for employers as they grapple with the great variety of qualifications which will soon be available, and attempts to compare values of each with another.
All this, of course, is the response of government at last encouraging the development of vocational courses which may be more suitable for many students and indeed for many employers. For too long it was the case that there was almost nothing available in schools for the non-academic students.
Simon Potten, assisted by the Assistant Head, tlaked us through the ideas of community cohesion, and how schools are trying to cope with developing greater community awareness among the students.
Most interesting of all were the short presentations from students aged from 13-16. It was interesting to see in many cases the great confidence and enthusiasm which they displayed as they talked us through their experiences of business, enterprise and work experience placements.
Over refreshments later it was clear that there is so much to be gained from developing links between school and the workplace.
Our thanks go to Oakmeeds, who continue to sponsor the BHBPA each year, for putting on this event. All those to whom I spoke afterwards were impressed, and I hope to hear soon that the school has managed to get a new Governor representing the business community as a result.
