Carville Switchgear Ltd

Yesterday I visited Carville Switchgear in Jubilee Road and was shown around the thriving business by Yolanda Smith, the Company Secretary, and Peter Somerville, one of the founders of the company 14 years ago.

They began in Burgess Hill in Victoria Road building low voltage switchboards for larger enterprises and now have integrated engineering offices and manufacturing plant under one roof with over 10000sq ft of space.

Switchboards are engineered to client specification using powerful CAD facilities. Each project is assigned to a design engineer to endure that the best solution in terms of size and functionality is achieved.

While there I was able to see the huge new project in progress for the Savoy Hotel in London and another smaller one for the British Embassy in Baghdad. Other projects are in progress for universities and hospitals across Britain.

At present thirty people are employed at Carville Switchgear. Some of the younger ones are products of the Modern Apprenticeship Schemes run by colleges at Lewes and Crawley. The company takes trainees who are over 18 years.

This is yet another example of a successful company of international renown trading from Headquarters in Burgess Hill. This year they expect to have a record turnover. Peter was cautious about the next two years, but reckons that they will continue to prosper.

It was a pleasure to engage with such sensible and successful people, and my thanks go to them for giving me so much of their time.
