In light of the current economic climate I thought I would drop you a line with an observation and firstly a question …
“Can businesses talk themselves into trouble during a recession?
The reason I ask this question is that we as a company are still thriving, expanding and investing. Some of the investment is in the fabric and functionality of our building and for this we need reliable suppliers who are able to offer a prompt response. Wherever possible we also like to use local businesses. My recent experiences lead me to believe that some businesses are putting themselves at risk by losing sight of the first law of business – customer care.
Trying to get responses, quotes and schedules from some businesses can best be compared to getting blood out of stone. Now I don’t believe that they are so busy they don’t need the work and if that was the case then surely an explanation would be the professional thing to do?
My feeling is that the fear of recession and its consequences can instill a degree of panic and paralysis and the end result resembles a headless chicken!
To my mind, having experience previous recessions there is only one state of mind to adopt – don’t panic, keep on doing what you do well but with a little more steel and determination. Maybe then I could find businesses able to complete my needs on time and in a professional manner.
Just my observations, be interested to hear what you think.
Kind regards
Matt Gardner

I totally agree with your thoughts - it is something we can talk ourselves into "law of attraction" and all that!
I started my business in 1990 on the back and still in a deep recession with crazy interest rates etc. My view is that there is no room for complacency in a company and it is completely exposed during a recession. The buyer who was perhaps content with arrangements previously has to be constantly looking for more value for money or less money and this creates the opportunity for us all to wn new business.
Incidentally I see you provide Trend systems, we have been doing their warehousing and UK/international shipping for the last 14 years and have survived the changes under Caradon/Novar/Honeywell.
Good luck in 2009 lets buck the Trend!

I also totally agree that the country is being talked into recession, firstly by Politicians and secondly by the Journalists in Newspapers, Television and Radio.
We have not seen a recession at Cirrus Laser, we had a very good 2008 and this year has started positively with plenty of work. However, we are members of the Association of Industrial Laser Users (AILU) and our members in the Midlands who have automotive and yellow goods customers have seen turnover drop by 25% or more. JCB in particular have seen unprecedented reductions in plant purchases which has resulted in our Association members having to resort to 4 day working weeks. At Cirrus Laser we are not dependant on one industry sector and in 2008 our largest customer represented 12.7% of turnover. With a large variety of industries in which our customers trade we are in a better position than most companies in the sub-contract cutting business.
We use a telemarketing company based in Brighton to perform customer service and new customer prospecting. In the third and fourth quarters of 2008 we ramped up from 1.5 days per week to 2 days per week and in the first quarter of 2009 we have ramped even further with 3 days telemarketing / customer service. We actively follow-up all of our quotes, some customers are targeted each Friday to ensure we have not missed quotes or orders and this has worked today with a 'missed faxed' order from a big multi-national customer exporting worldwide with underwater exploration equipment. If you do not get out to the market place, if you do not talk to your customers then you are in danger of seeing a recession.

I am glad I saw this thread, with very good observations and comments.
Listening to the radio one morning I was so fed up when I heard yet another gloomy damaging PREDICTION
from the CBI, and I thought they were supposed to be on our side.
I just cannot understand why there are these relentless damaging PREDICTIONS not facts, from these organizations, even one from the IMF. I think it makes everyone fed up and reduces buyer confidence. Also the press gleefully reports unemployment up by 5%, why not say we have 95% employment.
OK so we are in a bit of a downturn at the moment, but if all these gloomy, damaging PREDICTIONS and FORCASTS could be banned I just think we might get through this a bit quicker, or am I being too naïve.

Gentlemen
Matt's question is a good one... in my view businesses can easily talk themselves into trouble during a recession. I also contend that if they catch themselves before they eat too far into their resources, it is straightforward to talk them back out of trouble too.
If anyone else experiences terminally slow response from suppliers that they would otherwise be happy to deal with, please let me know. I will happily open a conversation up with them over a cup of coffee... this may be all they need to start thinking more positively.
If not and they need some paid coaching, then I offer an introducer fee that can go to a company, individual or choice of charity as preferred.
This downturn probably provides the biggest opportunity for businesses that we will see this decade... Good luck to all!

Dear Matt,
I agree with all your comments
I worked at your premises last week and from the outside was very impressed with your operations
Your staff were positive and committed to ensuring your wiring and systems were 100%
We responded and booked in the work within hours of your request, as you say there are too many businesses dwelling on the recession, being negative and note getting those urgent quotes and services dealt with that we all need
We have never been busier over the last 10 years and I’m committed to giving every new and existing customer our best possible service
Kindest regards
